The traditional staging of Inti Raymi, also known as the Festival of the Sun, will be announced internationally from China this year. With this announcement, the city seeks to better promote itself in Asian markets. This was confirmed to Agencia Andina by the mayor of Cusco, Luis Pantoja Calvo. He also said that the launch will take place in Lima’s Plaza Mayor. It will also take place in Qoricancha.

“The date is yet to be confirmed. First, there will be the international launch from China. Then there will be the national launch from the Plaza de Armas in Lima. And the regional launch will be from the Qoricancha. In addition, everything has to be finished in March,” the mayor emphasized. He also explained that they are evaluating up to three cities in China for the presentation.

The mayor said that the trip would take place next month. This would happen after the initial postponement of the announcement about the venue for the event. “The mayor of Cusco will go as ambassador. That is why he will take the royal court. The Inca and the Coya will go. The ministries and TV Peru will also participate,” he said.

From Cusco, the coordination is being led by the Municipal Festivities Company, Emufec. They are also working together with the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Foreign Trade, and Tourism. Pantoja indicated that presentations have already been made in the United States and Europe. Therefore, they now want to attract the Chinese market more strongly.

Inti Raymi is staged every June 24 on the esplanade of the Sacsayhuamán archaeological park. More than 3,700 tourists enter the site. In addition, around 50,000 people attend as spectators. This year, the capacity is expected to be expanded with an additional 1,000 seats, so that more people can watch the ceremony in greater comfort. According to municipal data, 30% of visitors this season are domestic. The rest are foreign tourists.
