The 5 Day Trip: An Expertly Coordinated Schedule
The 5 Day Ausangate Trek is an incredible journey into the heart of the Andes, not merely a route. Our team’s personal favorite is this trip since it’s unadulterated, peaceful, and incredibly remote from the masses. We’ve methodically prepared every step to make you feel protected while witnessing the majestic scale of the mountains.
Here is the experience waiting for you:
Day 1: Gentle Welcome and Connection
From Cusco, your journey starts with a stunning drive that takes you to the serene meadows close to Upis. In order to give your body the best opportunity to successfully and gradually acclimate to the altitude and prepare you for the ascent around Ausangate, we purposefully kept this first trip brief and moderate (only three hours).
Day 2: The Great Climb.
This is the long, difficult day that will pay off right away. Surrounded by enormous glaciers and the most azure lakes you’ve ever seen, we traverse two significant mountain passes. As we continue our tour around Ausangate Mountain, don’t worry about the nine hours of trekking; our local guides will take special care to ensure that you enjoy every view safely.
Day 3: An Uncrowded View.
We get up early! We use this tactic to ensure that you get to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) well in advance of the throng. Before continuing on to our remote tent close to Ausangate Cocha (Ausangate Lake), you have the opportunity to observe the colors in a moment of genuine peace.
Day 4: Summiting the Pass.
Your greatest accomplishment of the day is your arrival at the magnificent Palomani Pass (5300m). Our knowledgeable staff offers this peak their undivided attention, ensuring your safe and steady descent past rivers and lagoons, providing you with the best views of the Ausangate massif as a whole.
Day 5: Celebration and Farewell.
Your reward, the warm, natural thermal springs of Pacchanta, awaits you after one final look at the peaks. Before we return you to Cusco in cozy, private transportation, there’s no better way to unwind and enjoy your achievement.
Location of the tour: South of Cusco, province of Quispicanchis, Paqchanta.
Nature of the Tour: Ground transportation, 4-hour hike, medium difficulty level, distance 5 miles, it is necessary to present good physical condition and health.

Essential Expert Tips for a Safe Ausangate Trek |
|
|---|---|
| The Sacred Mountain | Ausangate is known as the “Creator of Water” and is Cusco’s most revered peak. It’s a natural sanctuary for wildlife like the Andean Condor and Vicuñas, demanding respect from all who enter. |
| Q’ero Culture Encounter | The trek offers a genuine encounter with Andean life. The Q’ero community maintains ancient traditions, where rituals like the Gratitude Ceremony promote a deep spiritual connection with nature. |
| Altitude and Challenge | The trail starts high at 4,200 meters and climbs to nearly 5,200 meters at Palomani Pass. Altitude is the main challenge, making careful planning and a slow pace our priority. |
| Acclimation (The Must Do) | Acclimatization is your peace of mind. We strongly advise taking at least three easy practice hikes in Cusco beforehand (spots like Cristo Blanco are perfect) for your body to adjust. |
| Best Time to Trek | The ideal season is April through November (sunny and dry). For fewer crowds, consider late March or December. Avoid January and February due to heavy rainfall. |
| Weather Preparedness | Be ready for anything! Days are warm (10°C–20°C), but nights drop sharply, often below -10°C in the dry season. Warm, waterproof clothing and proper sun protection are essential gear. |
| Guided vs. Solo | A guided tour ensures safety, support, and expert emergency logistics. If going solo, be prepared to hire local mule drivers in Upis/Tinqui and have a basic knowledge of Spanish or Quechua. |
| Getting to the Trailhead | The bus from Cusco to Tinqui (the start) takes about 4 hours. Since local lodging is limited, we advise leaving Cusco early to begin the trek to your first camp at Upis the same day to maximize your acclimation time. |
