Puerto Maldonado

Located in the southernmost region of the Peruvian Amazon, near the province of Cusco, Puerto Maldonado is a small town surrounded by countless tourist destinations where you can enjoy a vacation in complete contact with nature. Can you imagine walking through the national parks and reserves of this spectacular region of Peru? We will guide you! Here we tell you everything you need to know to make the most of your time in Puerto Maldonado.

What to do in Puerto Maldonado?

Although the city is mainly a starting point for tourists who want to go deeper into the jungle, Puerto Maldonado also offers some interesting activities. So that you don’t miss a single detail, we leave you the best places of interest in the city and its surroundings.

Tambopata Butterfly Garden

Did you know that Peru holds the Guinness World Record for having the largest number of butterfly species in the world? Three kilometers south of Puerto Maldonado is the first nursery in Peru with live butterflies on display. In an area of 600 square meters, you will be able to explore and learn about the spectacular habitat of Amazonian butterflies that live around beautiful flowers and native, ornamental and medicinal plants.

How to get there: Due to the short distance, the easiest way is to take a taxi in the city center. In addition, the Butterfly Garden is located just 150 meters from the Puerto Maldonado Airport, so you can take the opportunity to visit it upon your arrival or before your return flight.

Amazon Shelter

As in many corners of the Peruvian jungle, in Puerto Maldonado you will find centers in charge of rescuing and rehabilitating animals to return them to their natural habitat. An example of this is the Amazon Reserve, where you will find animals from monkeys to crocodiles, toucans or peccaries living in harmony with their environment.

How to get there: Refugio Amazonas is 25 minutes south of Puerto Maldonado, so you can easily get there by taxi or motorcycle taxi.

Tambopata Ecotourism Corridor

This is a great place for those considering a family trip. The four indigenous communities of Madre de Dios have collaborated to create this corridor that offers endless activities: kayaking, jungle beaches, walks in native forests, paintball, swimming pools… There is something for everyone, for everyone!

How to get there: kilometer zero of the corridor is located in the city of Puerto Maldonado, and the route continues along the banks of the Tambopata River. You can take a short walk or take a motorcycle taxi and stop at the place that interests you most.

Biodiversity Viewpoint

In a city where traditional houses barely have more than one floor, it is surprising to find a building like the Mirador de la Biodiversidad. This tower is perfect for enjoying panoramic views of Puerto Maldonado and, best of all, incredible sunsets.

How to get there: The Biodiversity Viewpoint is located in the center of the city, so you can walk or take a motorcycle taxi there if you prefer.
