Our 5 day tour of Cusco with connection to Machu Picchu

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? We’re not just any tour company; we’re your local friends in the Andes, and we want to show you the real magic of our home. This 6 day itinerary is our absolute favorite a perfect blend of mind blowing history and breathtaking nature.

Day 1: Welcome to Cusco, the “Navel of the World!” We’ll be waiting for you at the airport with a big smile! We’ll get you to your hotel to settle in and acclimatize (seriously, take it easy the altitude is no joke!). But we won’t sit still for long. This afternoon, our adventure begins with a Cusco city tour that connects you to the past. We’ll explore living temples and finish at the jaw dropping Sacsayhuaman fortress, where the giant stones will have you asking, “How on earth did they build this?!”

Day 2: The Golden Heart of the Sacred Valley Today, we dive deep into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This place has a special energy. First, we’ll get lost in the colors and aromas of the famous Pisaq Market perfect for treasure hunting! Then, we’ll stand beneath the towering Ollantaytambo fortress, a living Inca town. In the afternoon, we’ll board one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, winding along the river to Aguas Calientes (the town below Machu Picchu), where we’ll spend the night.

Day 3: The Big Day. Your Machu Picchu Tour! This is the moment you’ve been waiting for. We’ll get up early to be among the first to greet the citadel. Seeing Machu Picchu for the first time, as the morning mist rises, is a feeling you just can’t describe in words. As your guides, we’ll take you through every corner, sharing stories you won’t find in any history book. This isn’t just a tour; it’s the day you’ll remember forever. That afternoon, we’ll head back to Cusco with a full heart.

Day 4: The Turquoise Jewel The Humantay Lake Hike Ready for a challenge? The hike to Humantay Lake is one of our favorite high altitude adventures. It’s a climb, we won’t lie, but we’ll be right beside you every step of the way. And when you reach the top and see that impossible turquoise water resting beneath a massive glacier… you’ll get it. It’s pure magic.

Day 5: Nature’s Masterpiece  The Rainbow Mountain Tour Today, we’re going to “walk on a rainbow!” You’ve seen the pictures, but nothing prepares you for the 7 Color Mountain (Vinicunca). Our Rainbow Mountain excursion is a journey through landscapes that look like they’re from another planet. The hike is challenging due to the altitude, but the reward is a 360 degree view of painted peaks that will leave you speechless.

Day 6: Until Next Time! (Departure) It’s always hard to say goodbye. We’ll share one last breakfast, reminisce about the best moments, and then make sure you get to the Cusco airport safely with a recharged soul and a full camera roll. You won’t leave as a client; you’ll leave as part of our family.

Travel Info

What to Pack

Be sure to pack light, comfortable clothing for warm days and layers for cooler evenings. Due to the altitude, it’s important to bring a light jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect from the sun. Sturdy, comfortable walking shoes are essential, especially for the hikes. Don’t forget your camera to capture the incredible views!

Altitude

Cusco and Machu Picchu are located at high altitudes (Cusco at 3,400 meters / 11,155 feet), so we recommend arriving a day early to acclimate. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first day, and take it easy as you adjust to the altitude.

Health and Safety

It’s essential to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities for the first few hours after arrival. We advise carrying any personal medications you may need. Travel insurance is recommended for coverage in case of emergencies. Our professional guides are trained in first aid and safety protocols to ensure a secure experience.

Currency

The official currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Credit cards are widely accepted in most tourist areas, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases and tips. ATMs are available in Cusco, Aguas Calientes, and other towns.

Electricity and Voltage

The voltage in Peru is 220V, and the plug type is typically the European-style (two-pronged). Bring a power adapter if you are traveling with electronics that require a different plug type.

Weather

The weather in Cusco and the Sacred Valley is typically mild. The dry season (April to October) offers sunny days and chilly nights, while the wet season (November to March) can bring showers, especially in the afternoon. Be sure to check the forecast before your trip to pack accordingly.

Important Tips

  • Stay hydrated: The high altitude can cause dehydration, so drink plenty of water throughout your trip.
  • Respect the local culture: Peruvians are friendly, and small gestures like learning a few words of Spanish can go a long way in building rapport.
  • Time Zone: Peru is in the UTC -5 time zone. There is no daylight saving time, so check the time difference before you travel.

The mysterious Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is now one of the best destinations in the world, a paradise for those who visit it again after many years or for those who have never been there; It is a place in perfect harmony with nature (Mother Earth) A city that developed in perfect harmony with the mountain god (Apus) who surrounded and protected it.

The Inca city of Machu Picchu was built to be completely protected by its inhabitants, essentially invisible, in complete harmony with the environment and built using local resources and energy. Machu Picchu is unique and different from any other place in the world, not only because of its beautiful design, the indescribable spirituality of its architecture, the perfect integration with the enormous mountains that surround it, the wonderful natural environment, but also because it has a unique vortex of energy; but because it maintains a sense of mystery that can feel very real. All around you can see birds swimming freely in the temples, flying on the tops of the mountains or flowing through the rivers; In places decorated by local residents and tourists, camels graze on green grass, drink pure water from the glacier or sunbathe. You do not need to speak Quechua (native language of the Incas), Spanish or English to visit Machu Picchu, nor do you need a translator, guide or religious teachings; meet in person the people who inhabit this holy city. Have a direct relationship with Mother Earth.

Machu Picchu, a place to visit before you die

When you are right there, standing in the heart of the Inca city of Machu Picchu, you realize that there is an indescribable feeling. Many people point it out as a place to visit before they die, or perhaps a place to see to move on with their life.

Whatever train you arrive on, whether it’s the Vistadome, the Expedition or the award-winning Hiram Bingham (considered one of the best trains in the world), they all offer luxurious service and are named after the American master who built it. Built in 1911. Rediscovered the lost city of the Incas, when you are in the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu, you feel an incredible sense of mystery and energy. Or maybe you are one of those who like to enter Machu Picchu and follow the Inca Trail through the Puerta del Sol (Intipunku), which is considered one of the best hikes in the world.

Archaeological investigations show that this mysterious Inca city has only existed for 90 years, since it was founded by Pachacutec in the 16th century, but was given to the world in 1911 by Hiram Bingham of North America. It was named Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1983 and one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2007. Its main attractions include the Intihuatana, Temple of the Three Windows, Temple of the Sun, Ritual Stone, Temple Area, Inca House, Temple of the Condor and the Observatory, among others. Seen from the side, Machu Picchu and nearby Huayna Picchu appear to form a giant human face emerging from the ground.

Frecuently Asked Questions

  • You don’t need to be an experienced hiker, but a moderate level of physical fitness is recommended. Most of the itinerary involves light walking, such as city and archaeological site visits. However, the hikes to Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain are more challenging due to the altitude and steep terrain. Proper acclimatization in Cusco during the first days is essential, and it’s best to walk at a slow, steady pace. Horses are available for rent on both hikes for those who need extra support.

  • The Machu Picchu experience includes your official entrance ticket, round-trip train and bus transportation, and a guided tour of approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. During the visit, a professional guide will explain the history, architecture, and spiritual importance of this iconic Inca city. After the guided portion, you’ll have free time to explore the site on your own and take photos before heading back to Aguas Calientes to catch the return train to Cusco.

  • The dry season, from May to September, is the best time for this tour—offering sunny days, clear skies, and ideal hiking conditions. However, you can also do the tour during the rainy season (November to March), keeping in mind there may be showers, mostly in the afternoons. April and October are transitional months with a mix of weather but still good for travel. Regardless of the season, the scenery is always stunning.

  • Yes, the package includes 5 nights of accommodation: 3 nights in Cusco, 1 night in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Town), and 1 additional night in Cusco after the visit to Machu Picchu. All hotels are comfortable, safe, and well-located. If you prefer higher-category hotels, such as boutique or 4-star options, upgrades can be arranged upon request.

  • You should pack comfortable clothing for walking, a warm jacket for cold mornings and evenings, a rain poncho or waterproof jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, hiking shoes, and a small daypack for daily excursions. For the Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain hikes, gloves, a scarf, and water are highly recommended. Don’t forget your passport (required for Machu Picchu) and any personal medications you may need.

  • It is built on the top of the mountain of the same name at 2,400 meters above sea level, located in the subtropical region, on the border between the Andes and the Amazon jungle.

  • Your luggage cannot exceed 5 kg for PeruRail and 8 kg for IncaRail, so we recommend you carry what you need in a backpack or hand luggage.

  • Cusco has two seasons, one is the dry season and the other is the rainy season. I can’t tell you what is the best time to go to Machu Picchu because it depends on each person’s experience; However, the most visited dates are in the dry season, as it does not rain and the bright sun will leave you at dawn with a deep impression that will allow you to admire the magnificence of Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world

  • If you are planning to travel during the peak season, I recommend booking your tickets 4 to 5 weeks in advance as it does not rain during this time and most tourists will take advantage of this season to visit. Now, if you plan to visit it in the low season, you can book 1 to 2 weeks in advance so that you can quietly enjoy your tour to Machu Picchu. Now, if you want to visit the Huayna Picchu mountain, I suggest you book 3 to 4 months in advance; because only 200 tickets are issued for the mountain each day and demand is greater during the high season.
