Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Your guide will pick you up from your accommodation in Cusco at 5:30 in the morning for a private transfer to Ollantaytambo train station, where you will board the Vistadome Observatory Train. The trip takes 1.5 hours and goes along the Urubamba River to go downhill from the highlands to the cloud forest. You will experience unforgettable views of the Sacred Valley with snow-capped peaks and subtropical landscapes through the panoramic train windows and glass-domed observatory.

When you arrive in the small town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo) you can have a coffee, and then you’ll go on a 30-minute bus ride up to the entrance of Machu Picchu citadel. Your guide will take you on the marked private tour of Machu Picchu (approximately 2–3 hours), and you will get to see the highlights of the site such as the Temple of the Sun, Temple of the Condor, and breathtaking views of the valley. Your knowledgeable guide will share stories, boondocks, and cultural aspects that very few visitors will experience.

After your visit, treat yourself to a gourmet buffet lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel adjacent to Machu Picchu. You’ll be delighted with incredible Peruvian cuisine prepared with local ingredients. Then you take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, enjoy the town if you desire, and board the Vistadome Observatory Train for your return to Ollantaytambo. Travel Info – Private Machu Picchu Tour with Observatory Train

Elevation:

The excursion provides a fascinating journey across different ecosystems in Peru. The trip begins in Cusco (3,400 m / 11,155 ft), descending through the Sacred Valley (2,792 m / 9,160 ft) en route to Machu Picchu (2,430 m / 7,972 ft). Gaining lower elevation means travelers will experience warmer air with higher oxygen levels in the cloud forest. Unlike trekking at high altitude, this program involves minimal physical exertion making it accessible for most visitors.

Difficulty:

The Private Machu Picchu Tour with Observatory Train is categorized as easy to moderate and accessible for travelers of any age and fitness level. The tour has a guided portion at Machu Picchu and involves walking on stone paths, gentle inclines, and some stairs. Rest stops are included throughout the guided experience. Comfortable shoes, light clothing, and hydration will lead to a good experience. Travelers do not need to have any prior hiking experience as this is a beautiful, enjoyable experience focused on cultural immersion and comfort rather than physical challenge.

Length of tour:

This is a full-day tour that begins with a pick-up from the hotel in Cusco around 5:30 a.m. and returns at approximately 8:00 p.m. The itinerary will consist of a transfer to Ollantaytambo station to travel by train on the beautiful Vistadome Observatory Train for approximately an hour and a half. After arriving at Machu Picchu train station, a bus transfer to the top of the mountain will take around 30 minutes. A private guided tour of the citadel will follow, lasting 2 – 3 hours, which will include lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. All logistics are managed by Uros Expeditions to make your experience seamless and worry free.

Climate:

The climate on this route varies significantly with altitude. Cusco is generally cool, with temperatures ranging from 10 – 18°C (50 – 64°F), while Machu Picchu and Sacred Valley are considerably warmer and more humid, usually 18 – 25°C (64 – 77°F) during the day. The dry season is from April to October, which is generally considered the best time to visit, with bright skies and ideal photo opportunities. On the other hand, the rainy season is from November to March, when light showers are more likely and usually begin in the afternoon. The landscapes will be greener and livelier during this time of year. A light rain jacket or poncho is recommended year-round.

Best Time to Experience:

The best time for this experience is May to September, when there is less rainfall and visibility is excellent. June, July and August are the peak season months, and we highly recommend planning ahead and reserving train tickets and entrance tickets in advance. The shoulder months — April, May, September and October — are great timeframes with nice weather and crowds that are relatively thin, making it a great time to enjoy taking photos and an overall pleasant experience inside of Machu Picchu – further decrease in visitation.`

Train Service:

The Vistadome Observatory Train of PeruRail is one of the most beautiful train rides in South America – if not the most. With large panoramic windows host to patrons and space for individuals to enjoy the scenery at one’s own leisure. Comfortable seating, including the Glass-roofed observatory carriage would provide great comfort while enjoying vistas of the changing landscapes of the Andes and the Urubamba River. Passengers may walk across different carriages and visit the observatory lounge and an added bonus, while there you could enjoy the complimentary live music and dance performances from the Andes region performers. Light snacks and beverages are offered in conjunction with attentive staff providing a luxurious and memorable journey to begin your travels to Machu Picchu, second only to the famous Hiram Bingham Train.

To ensure you have the best chance for a comfortable trip we recommend that you pack the following items:

  • Passport: Essential for boarding a train or entering Machu Picchu.
  • Good walking shoes: Comfortable, lightweight, with a good grip for the often-stony terrain.
  • Light-weight jacket or fleece: The early mornings and evenings can be chilly, especially in Cusco.
  • Rain protection: A poncho or waterproof jacket is an excellent idea, especially November-March.
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen: At altitude, the UV levels rise quickly, so make sure to bring along some sun protection.
  • A refillable water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential policy for the better part of the day.
  • Camera or smart-phone: To capture the panoramic landscape views and ancient architecture of the site.
  • A small amount of cash in Peruvian soles: You may want to purchase something small or tip your guide and/or shop for souvenirs in Aguas Calientes.
  • Prescribed personal medication: If you need it, keep in mind it’s a 10 miles off site to any pharmacy near Machu Picchu.

To add a few notes:

Entrance to Machu Picchu is controlled by guidelines imposed by the Ministry of Culture. Officials have implemented official circuits to maintain the site and flow of tourists pass through the archeological zone. The preferred circuit would be the Circuit 2, it will have access to the classic classic viewpoints, as well as the center area to see the temple. If we cannot sell Circuit 2, then Uros Expeditions will apply the best option available to aword the plan either way- on the Circuit 1 or Circuit 3- allowing for a complete experience with ample time to view the ancient sites of Machu Picchu.

Viewing permits and train tickets are rationed and typically sold well in advance, so try and pre-book well in advance if possible, specifically during high season, of at least 1 to 2 months to confirm your preferred circuit and time.
