Lares Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Begin Your Adventure – Soak in Lares Hot Springs & Camp by a Waterfall
Cusco – Lares Hot Springs – Kiswarani Village – Waterfall Campsite
Your journey to Machu Picchu begins with an early pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, Urubamba, Huaran, or Pisac at 5:00 a.m. You’ll drive for about three hours through the Sacred Valley, surrounded by snowcapped peaks and rolling farmlands, before arriving at the famous Lares Hot Springs. Here, a delicious breakfast awaits alongside incredible views of the Andes. Recharge your body and spirit in the natural thermal pools, which range in temperature and are rich in minerals known to relieve stress, muscle tension, and bone pain.
After a relaxing soak, you’ll take a short drive to the trailhead at Punta Carretera (3,300 m / 10,827 ft), where your horsemen and llamas will be waiting. From here, your trek officially begins! You’ll hike gently uphill for about two hours to reach Kiswarani village, often referred to as the “Potato Valley” for its abundant native potato crops. Along the way, your guide will point out native medicinal plants and describe the traditional agricultural techniques still in use today.
After a scenic lunch and a traditional llama ceremony by local herders—celebrating the sacred role of llamas in Inca culture—you’ll continue hiking for another two hours. Your first campsite awaits beneath the cascading Kiswarani Waterfalls at 3,850 m (12,631 ft). As night falls, enjoy a hot drink, a hearty dinner, and a sky full of stars.
Day 2: Cross the Majestic Condor Pass & Immerse in Local Culture
Kiswarani – Condor Pass – Cancha Cancha Village
Wake up to a hot drink and the tranquil sounds of alpacas grazing in the valley. After breakfast, you’ll begin one of the most memorable days of the trek—a challenging but rewarding climb to Condor Pass (also known as Pachacutec Pass), sitting at 4,680 m (15,354 ft). The ascent takes about 3 to 4 hours and offers breathtaking views of glacial peaks, turquoise lakes, and sweeping valleys. An emergency horse is available if you need a break.
Once at the summit, you’ll be greeted with 360-degree views above the clouds, with the mighty Mount Pitusiray (5,700 m / 18,700 ft) dominating the skyline. Celebrate this achievement with a warm drink before beginning your descent.
A one-hour downhill hike brings you to “El Mirador,” a perfect lunch spot with stunning vistas and grazing llamas. After lunch, continue for another three hours downhill to reach the remote village of Cancha Cancha (3,750 m / 12,303 ft). This is one of the few communities in the Andes that still lives entirely without electricity or modern technology.
Explore the village, meet local families, and learn about traditional weaving techniques passed down for generations. If you’d like, bring school supplies or small gifts for the children—you’ll have the chance to visit the local school, where students still speak Quechua, the ancient Inca language. End the day with a hot drink and a cozy dinner prepared by your trekking chef.
Day 3: From the Highlands to the Sacred Valley – Visit the Maras Salt Mines
Cancha Cancha – Huaran – Maras Salt Mines – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
After a peaceful night in the mountains, enjoy breakfast and say goodbye to the villagers of Cancha Cancha. Today’s journey is a four-hour descent along a scenic trail, where you’ll pass fields of potatoes, quinoa, and beans farmed with ancient Inca tools. As you descend into the Sacred Valley, notice the dramatic shift in landscape—from high-altitude tundra to a warmer, greener valley filled with fruit trees and colorful crops.
At the town of Huaran (2,700 m / 8,858 ft), you’ll part ways with your trekking crew and drive to the stunning Maras Salt Mines. These ancient salt pans have been used since pre-Inca times and are still harvested by local families today. The striking white pools cascading down the mountainside offer one of the most unique photo opportunities in the region—and the salt, rich in minerals, is a perfect souvenir.
Next, head to Ollantaytambo, the last living Inca town. Explore its ancient streets, water canals, and original stonework before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. In the evening, you’ll board the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, check into your hotel and rest up for the grand finale tomorrow.
Day 4: Discover the Lost City of the Incas – Machu Picchu
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
Today is the highlight of your adventure. Wake up early and catch one of the first buses to Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise over this ancient wonder. Your guide will lead a two-hour walking tour, sharing the history, mystery, and engineering marvels of the Inca Empire. Marvel at the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana sundial, and the Sacred Plaza. If you’ve booked an extra ticket, you can also hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain for panoramic views.
After soaking in the magic of the site, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes. In the afternoon, board your train to Ollantaytambo, then a private transfer will return you to Cusco. You’ll arrive in the evening with memories of a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Peru’s highlands, villages, and ancient citadels.

THE HISTORY OF LARES
The Lares district was established on October 22, 1892. Its origins date back to colonial times. Previously, on July 25, 1857, the city was included in the department of La Convencion. One of the most difficult periods for the city occurred on January 14, 1958, when a landslide in the mountains caused the Yanatile River to collapse. Dozens of people died and thousands were injured in the floods. At the time of its founding (in 1892), the district consisted of 14 agricultural communities.
Today, Lares is a progressive region that has successfully adapted to tourism in the Cusco region. The thermal baths in the area are its greatest tourist attraction. Different tourists arrive there every day, most of them are part of the “Lares trek” (a four-day trek to Machu Picchu). tourist objects
