Travel Info – Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Rainbow Mountain

Duration & Best Time to Travel

This tour lasts 5 days and 4 nights, and the best months to travel are from April to October, during the dry season. Expect clear skies, sunny days, and cooler nights—ideal for both sightseeing and hiking.

Altitude & Acclimatization

This journey reaches high altitudes, so proper acclimatization is essential. Here are the elevations of the key locations:

  • Cusco: 3,399 m (11,152 ft)
  • Machu Picchu: 2,430 m (7,972 ft)
  • Rainbow Mountain: 5,200 m (17,060 ft)

We recommend spending at least one day in Cusco before doing any strenuous activity. Take it slow the first day, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol.

Weather & What to Wear

Weather in the Andes can be unpredictable, but generally:

  • Cusco & Rainbow Mountain: Cold mornings and nights, sunny during the day
  • Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley: Warmer and more humid

We recommend dressing in layers, wearing comfortable hiking shoes, and packing a light rain jacket, especially during the shoulder season.

Physical Difficulty

The overall tour is moderate, but the hike to Rainbow Mountain is more physically demanding due to the altitude. Horses are available locally to rent for those who prefer assistance.

What to Bring

  • Small daypack
  • Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snacks for the hikes
  • Personal medication, especially for altitude sickness
  • Cash in soles for tips or small purchases

Train & Hotel Information

The package includes round-trip train service to Machu Picchu in Expedition or Voyager class. Upgrades to Vistadome are available upon request.

Accommodations are in tourist-class hotels, with options to upgrade to superior or luxury categories.

Emergency & Health Advice

Always inform your guide of any medical conditions. For those with heart or respiratory issues, we strongly recommend consulting your physician before attempting high-altitude activities like Rainbow Mountain.

Faq's

  • Yes, altitude can be a challenge for some travelers, especially upon arrival in Cusco, which sits at approximately 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level. Symptoms of altitude sickness may include headache, shortness of breath, or nausea. To minimize discomfort, we recommend arriving at least a day early to acclimatize, drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals or alcohol on the first day, and considering coca tea, which locals use to relieve symptoms. The hike to Rainbow Mountain reaches up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), so proper acclimatization and a slow, steady pace are essential.

  • This tour includes comfortable 3-star accommodations: two nights in Cusco, one night in Aguas Calientes (near Machu Picchu), and another night in Cusco after the visit to Machu Picchu. All hotels are carefully selected for cleanliness, safety, and convenient location. If you prefer a higher category (4-star or boutique hotels), we can easily arrange an upgrade upon request.

  • Most of the tour involves light to moderate walking, making it suitable for travelers of all ages. The City Tour and Sacred Valley excursions involve short walks at archaeological sites. Machu Picchu also includes moderate walking, with stairs and uneven paths, but you can take breaks along the way. The most physically demanding day is the Rainbow Mountain hike, which requires a good level of fitness due to the altitude and elevation gain. However, horse rentals are available on-site for those who prefer a less strenuous option.

  • The Machu Picchu tour includes round-trip train tickets, bus transportation to the entrance, entrance fees to the citadel, and a guided tour with a professional English-speaking guide. The guided tour lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, during which you’ll explore the main temples, plazas, agricultural terraces, and viewpoints. After the tour, you’ll have some free time to take photos or enjoy the scenery before heading back to Aguas Calientes for the train to Cusco.

  • We recommend packing versatile clothing for both warm and cool weather, as temperatures can vary greatly. Essentials include comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots, a warm jacket for cold mornings and evenings, a waterproof jacket or rain poncho, sunblock, sunglasses, a hat, and a small backpack. Don’t forget your passport (required for Machu Picchu entry), personal medications, and a refillable water bottle. For Rainbow Mountain, gloves and a scarf are also advisable due to the high altitude and potential cold winds.
