The morning starts with a steady 4-hour ascent to the highest point on the trail: Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215 m / 13,829 ft). Upon reaching the summit, you’ll take in the sweeping mountain views and feel a true sense of accomplishment. From here, we descend for about 1.5 hours into the beautiful Pacaymayu Valley (“Hidden River”), where a well-deserved lunch awaits.

Today’s journey leads you deeper into the lush cloud forest, following a gently undulating path—what we fondly call “Inca flat.” The landscape transforms with every step: vibrant orchids, moss-draped trees, and panoramic vistas of Mount Salkantay and the Vilcabamba range. You’ll feel as though you’re walking through a living postcard.
After a gradual two-hour ascent, we’ll reach Phuyupatamarca (“Town in the Clouds”), an awe-inspiring Inca site perched at 3,600 meters. Here, we’ll pause to absorb sweeping views of the Urubamba River snaking through the valley below. As we descend a beautifully preserved stone staircase toward our final campsite, you’ll visit the stunning archaeological terraces of Intipata, followed by the incredible Wiñay Wayna—a spiritual jewel of Inca architecture set on a dramatic hillside.
We arrive at camp just in time for a chef-prepared lunch, with the afternoon reserved for rest and reflection. Later, your expert guide will lead you through the Wiñay Wayna site, weaving together the story of the Incas in preparation for your upcoming arrival at Machu Picchu.
As night falls, we gather for a heartfelt farewell celebration with our dedicated porters and chefs. A special dinner is served, honoring the bond created on the trail. The trail leads us through misty mountains toward the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where we’ll witness our first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu bathed in the golden morning light. From there, we descend for about an hour to reach the Lost City of the Incas. Around 7:40 a.m., we’ll enter the archaeological complex and begin a private guided tour lasting approximately two hours. Frequently Asked Questions
-
The Inca Trail is considered a moderate to challenging trek and requires a good level of physical fitness. The most demanding day is when you hike to Warmiwañusca Pass (Dead Woman’s Pass) at 4,215 meters (13,829 ft). This section involves a steady uphill climb of approximately four hours, followed by a descent into the valley. While no technical climbing skills are required, participants should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours per day on uneven stone paths, stairs, and mountain terrain.
Rainbow Mountain is a shorter hike (about 2 hours uphill), but it reaches an altitude of over 5,000 meters (17,060 ft), which makes it physically demanding due to reduced oxygen levels. Even travelers in good shape may feel shortness of breath. Proper acclimatization in Cusco before these activities is essential. Our guides set a comfortable pace and provide support throughout the journey.
-
Many destinations on this itinerary are located above 3,000 meters (9,842 ft), so altitude preparation is very important. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least one day before starting any major hikes. During your first days, walk slowly, avoid intense physical exertion, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol. Eating light meals can also help your body adjust.
Common mild symptoms of altitude sickness may include headaches, fatigue, or shortness of breath. These symptoms usually improve with rest and hydration. Coca tea is a traditional remedy commonly used in the Andes. If you have any medical concerns, consult your doctor before traveling to discuss preventive medication for altitude.
-
The Inca Trail package includes official entrance permits (which must be secured in advance), a professional licensed guide, a team of porters and cooks, all camping equipment (tents, dining tent, kitchen equipment), sleeping mat, and all meals during the trek (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). You will also receive a detailed briefing before departure.
On the final day, the package includes a guided tour of Machu Picchu and train transportation back to Ollantaytambo, followed by private transfer to Cusco. Please note that optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain require advance reservation due to limited availability and are not included unless specifically requested.
-
In Cusco and Puno, you will stay in carefully selected hotels that offer comfort, private bathrooms, and breakfast service. During the Sacred Valley visit, accommodation is in a comfortable hotel in Ollantaytambo to allow easy access to the Inca Trail starting point.
While trekking the Inca Trail, you will stay in high-quality tents set up by our professional team. Campsites are equipped with a dining tent and kitchen area where freshly prepared meals are served. On Amantani Island at Lake Titicaca, you will experience a traditional homestay with a local family. This accommodation is simple and authentic, offering a meaningful cultural exchange rather than luxury amenities. Basic facilities are provided, but there is no heating or WiFi.
-
Because this journey covers different ecosystems—from high Andes to cloud forest and high-altitude lake regions—it is important to pack strategically. We recommend bringing layered clothing to adapt to changing temperatures, including a warm jacket for cold mornings and evenings, especially at high elevations. A waterproof jacket or poncho is essential in case of rain.
Comfortable, well-worn hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial for the Inca Trail. Additional essentials include sunscreen (SPF 50+), sunglasses, a sun hat, reusable water bottle, personal toiletries, headlamp, and any necessary medications. For Lake Titicaca, bring extra warm clothing for nighttime. A detailed packing list will be provided prior to departure to ensure you are fully prepared.
