Travel Info

Travel Information

Before you embark on this incredible 7-day adventure, here is some essential information to help you make the most of your trip:

Accommodation

Throughout the tour, you’ll be staying in carefully selected hotels that offer comfort and convenience. All accommodations are centrally located to allow easy access to key attractions, with options for different budgets and preferences.

Meals

Breakfast is included every day at your hotel. On certain days, lunch and dinner will also be provided, particularly during the guided tours. These meals will feature a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes. If you have dietary restrictions, please inform us in advance.

Altitude

Altitude is an important factor to consider during your journey, as each place you will visit is at a considerable height that may affect some travelers. Below, we detail the altitude of the main destinations you will visit, along with some recommendations to help you acclimate:

  • Cusco: Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level. This is one of the highest cities in Peru and a key starting point of your tour. It is recommended to take a day to acclimate in Cusco before engaging in strenuous activities to avoid altitude sickness symptoms.
  • Sacred Valley: The Sacred Valley of the Incas has an average altitude of 2,800 meters (9,186 feet). Due to its lower altitude compared to Cusco, this valley offers an excellent opportunity to acclimate before ascending to higher locations like Machu Picchu. However, it is still recommended to take it easy during your visit.
  • Machu Picchu: The famous Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary is located at an altitude of approximately 2,430 meters (7,972 feet). While the altitude is not as high as Cusco, the journey from sea level (Aguas Calientes) involves a significant change in altitude. You will enjoy a tour of the ruins without severe effects of altitude sickness, but it is still important to stay well hydrated and take your time.
  • Rainbow Mountain: This is the highest point of your itinerary, reaching an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level. The hike to Rainbow Mountain is challenging due to the altitude, and altitude sickness is common. It is crucial to acclimate well before attempting this excursion and to walk slowly to avoid any issues. It is recommended to take breaks during the ascent.
  • Puno and Lake Titicaca: Puno is located at an altitude of 3,800 meters (12,467 feet), making it one of the highest destinations on this tour. The visit to Lake Titicaca includes the excursion to the Uros Islands, which are at a similar altitude, so it is important to be well acclimated before this part of the journey. Despite the altitude, the experience of the floating islands is fascinating and usually does not pose significant difficulties if you follow the recommendations to rest and avoid rushing.

To prevent altitude sickness, it is recommended to:

  • Avoid strenuous physical activity during the first few days.
  • Drink plenty of water and consume coca tea to help with acclimatization.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy meals while acclimating.
  • If you feel unwell, inform your guide immediately to take the necessary measures.

The tour is designed to allow for proper acclimatization, which makes adjusting to the high altitudes easier and enhances your enjoyment. By following these recommendations, your experience will be more pleasant and safe.

What to Bring

Pack light but make sure to bring essential items such as comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, a water bottle, a camera, and warm clothes, especially if you’re traveling to high-altitude regions. You might also want to bring a light rain jacket, as the weather can be unpredictable, especially during the rainy season (November to March).

Currency

The local currency in Peru is the Sol (PEN), but US Dollars are also accepted in many places. We recommend exchanging currency at the airport or in local banks and ATMs. Credit cards are widely accepted in larger cities and tourist areas, but it’s a good idea to carry some cash for smaller towns or markets.

Health and Safety

Peru is generally a safe destination for travelers, but it’s always a good idea to take basic precautions. Stay alert in crowded areas, avoid displaying valuable items, and use reputable transportation options. If you have any concerns about health, make sure to carry any necessary medications and check with your healthcare provider regarding recommended vaccinations.

Travel Insurance

We recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance that includes coverage for trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost baggage. This will give you peace of mind during your adventure.

Time Zone

Peru is in the Peru Time Zone (UTC-5). Please keep this in mind when planning activities or coordinating with family and friends at home.

Emergency Contacts

In case of an emergency, the local emergency number is 911. Make sure to also carry a copy of your passport and emergency contact numbers while traveling.
