Frequently Asked Questions
-
Your classic Inca Trail Trek takes 4 days, 3 nights, allowing for the complete experience, with all the majestic ruins and landscapes on route. However, if you don’t have that amount of time, there’s also a 2 day expedition, that will still allow for the magic of hiking a section of the trail and entering Machu Picchu via the Sun Gate.
-
Yes, of course, you cannot hike the Inca Trail Peru, without an official permit, and they are very limited. They sell months in advance, especially during the high season (May–September). If this is the trip of your dreams, the best advice is to book your Inca Trail tour as soon as possible.
-
It is hard, but not impossible. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu has long, steep ascents, deformed stone steps and one steep ascent from the highest point, which is 4,200 m (13,800 ft). Ultimately the altitude makes it tough, however, with 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco, a good pace set by you and your guides, most people complete it without any difficulties.
-
When you book with a licensed company, your Inca Trail tour usually already includes almost everything: transportation from Cusco, professional guides, porters, tents, sleeping mats, all meals on trek, and your ticket to Machu Picchu entrance, and at the end of everything you have a guided tour of the citadel.
-
The best months to hike the Inca Trail are during the dry season, between April and October. The skies are clearer, and you will have unobstructed views of the mountains and ruins. Between November and March is the rainy season, and the trail will close for maintenance in February.

If there are no permits available for the Inca Trail Machu Picchu, don’t worry; there are great alternatives for you to consider. The Salkantay Trek and Lares Trek also take you through beautiful scenery in the Andes mountains and also end in Machu Picchu. The difference is, however, that the Inca Trail is the only option that will allow you to walk through the Sun Gate, and that is what makes it special.
