Peru Promotes Adventure Tourism Among U.S. and Canadian Agents
With the goal of showcasing Peru as a country that goes beyond traditional routes, PROMPERÚ held its first-ever Peru Beyond the Route, a trade platform bringing together specialized buyers from the United States and Canada with Peruvian tour operators.
The initiative aimed to strengthen the international sale of Peruvian adventure and nature tourism products, as well as generate valuable new business opportunities.
The event, held at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Miraflores, brought together 11 specialized travel agents from North America alongside 15 Peruvian companies. The business meetings held generated potential deals worth USD 697,578.
As part of the program, between July 11 and 16, foreign buyers took part in a familiarization tour through Arequipa and Áncash. In these regions, they visited Laguna 69, Llanganuco Lake, the town of Chacas, Chavín de Huántar, Colca Canyon, the Chilina Valley, and Sibayo, among other destinations, where they took part in adventure tourism, nature, and living culture activities with an eye toward adding them to their sales catalogs.
Through initiatives like Peru Beyond the Route, PROMPERÚ—an agency under the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur)—reaffirms its work in positioning the country as a destination where adventure, nature, culture, and sustainability converge in unique experiences for foreign travelers.
Globally, adventure tourism is establishing itself as one of the fastest-growing segments. According to the Profile of the Foreign Tourist entering through Jorge Chávez International Airport (2025), 52% of international visitors take part in adventure activities during their trip, a figure that surpasses the 45% recorded in 2019.
In addition, average spending by this type of tourist reached USD 1,887, 26% higher than that of the traditional traveler, reflecting this segment’s significant weight in local economies.
Among the most sought-after activities are trekking, mountaineering, wildlife watching, and cultural experiences—areas where Peru offers a highly competitive range of options thanks to its geographic and cultural richness.
