Peru and Mexico Lead the Supply of Tourism Experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean
According to an analysis by Mabrian by Data Appeal, travelers’ opinions show one thing clearly: cultural activities are the most popular in Latin America and the Caribbean. In total, 40.1% of reviews mention cultural experiences. In contrast, active tourism accounts for 23%, and nature activities account for 17.1%. Therefore, the study highlights that Peru and Mexico lead the region’s tourism offerings, as together they account for more than half of the available activities.
According to Mabrian, Peru accounts for 25.8% of the tourism activities offered in Latin America and the Caribbean. Meanwhile, Mexico is close behind with 25.4%. Colombia comes next with 8.4%. Next is the Dominican Republic with 7.7%. In addition, Brazil and Argentina each have 6.1% of the regional market.
Mabrian also explained what happens when the offer is broken down by type of experience. First, cultural activities take the top spot with 36.9% of the total. Next, active tourism, which includes sports and adventure, accounts for 32%. Then, nature activities come in at 14.9% and include eco-trails and visits to parks and reserves. In addition, gastronomic options account for 22.3% and include food tours, tastings, and activities featuring local cuisine. In contrast, sun and beach activities account for only 3%. Finally, other categories such as shopping, nightlife, family activities, and wellness have very little presence and together account for barely 2% of the regional offerings.
The report also points out that this distribution shows significant differences between countries, as some have a more varied offering and others depend on fewer types of activities. In the case of Peru and Mexico, there are historical, archaeological, gastronomic (the famous Peruvian cuisine), adventure, and nature offerings. This makes them more attractive to travelers seeking a complete experience. In addition, this variety gives them more weight in the public’s preferences.
As reported by Mabrian by Data Appeal, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, and Argentina have a less varied range of tourist activities on offer. Their figures are below 10%. As a result, they show less diversification than Peru and Mexico. This suggests that destinations with more options can attract different audiences more easily. In addition, these countries need strategies to become more competitive, for example, by adding new tourist experiences.
