Wanderlust 2025 Global Rankings: Peru Stands Out and Leads South America
Our country was named one of the most desirable destinations on the planet in the 2025 Reader Travel Awards. These awards are organized by the British magazine Wanderlust. More than 208,000 readers voted, casting a total of over 4.8 million votes. As a result, Peru stood out in three important categories of the global ranking.
First, in the Most Desirable Country in the World category, Peru ranked fifth among ten finalists. It was also the highest-ranked country in South America, surpassing destinations such as South Africa, the United States, and New Zealand. It also ranked above Brazil and Ecuador. Japan led the podium, followed by Costa Rica and Canada.
Peru then took fourth place in Most Desirable Destination for Adventure. Once again, it was the highest-ranked country in South America. It also surpassed the United States, Chile, and Oman. It also ranked above the Philippines and Colombia. Meanwhile, in Most Desirable Destination for Culture and Heritage, the country came in seventh place. It was also the only representative from South America in the top ten.
When talking about Peru, Wanderlust recalled something well known. Many people think of Machu Picchu first. However, the magazine said we should not forget everything else. For example, it explained that Peru has many archaeological sites. It also pointed out that its large, green jungle is home to a huge variety of plants and animals. Therefore, the country offers much more than just one famous place.
The publication also highlighted adventure experiences. For example, it said that Peru is the birthplace of surfing on the Pacific waves. It also mentioned that its rivers are perfect for thrilling whitewater rafting. And although it may seem surprising, many areas of the Peruvian Andes still receive few visitors, so they can feel like a discovery. It also mentioned Cusco as one of the most fascinating cities in the world due to its Inca and colonial heritage.
Finally, Wanderlust recommended visiting other destinations in the country. For example, it named the Colca Canyon and the Nasca Lines. It also mentioned Chan Chan and the Cordillera Blanca. In addition, it invited visitors to explore the Peruvian Amazon. According to the magazine, there are ecolodges managed by indigenous communities there. This allows the experience to be tailored to each visitor. Peru is thus reaffirming its status as a diverse cultural and natural destination recognized around the world.
