Great News! Pozuzo Earns the Title of Charming Town of Peru
The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism announced that Pozuzo, in Pasco, is now a new “Pueblo con Encanto del Perú” (Charming Town of Peru). This title was confirmed by an official resolution. With this, the country recognizes its culture, history, and great tourism potential.
Minister Teresa Mera explained that this designation is part of the national strategy to diversify tourism. She also said that Pozuzo shows how the identity and work of its people can make a destination special. Thanks to this distinction, the town will be able to improve its tourism offerings and open up more opportunities for sustainable growth.
History of Pozuzo
Pozuzo surprises from the start. It was founded in 1859 by Austro-German settlers and Peruvian families. As a result, it maintains a very unique culture. In addition, its wooden houses, sloping roofs, carved balconies, and colorful gardens create a unique atmosphere. Even its suspension bridges blend Amazonian warmth with European style.
The town is also surrounded by the Yanachaga-Chemillén National Park. This allows visitors to enjoy crystal-clear pools, the Yulitunqui waterfall, nature trails, and wildlife. Due to this natural wealth, in 2023 Pozuzo received the international Best Tourism Villages award from UN Tourism.

The experience in Pozuzo is varied. For example, places such as the Plaza de los Colonos, the Schafferer Museum, the San José Church, the Pozucina–Prusia Identity Park, and the Emperor William I Bridge tell its story. In addition, its cuisine combines Austro-German recipes with local products. Its craft beer and dairy products are particularly noteworthy. There are also activities such as hiking, ecotourism, and bird watching. Every year, more than 6,000 tourists arrive, mainly from Peru, seeking an authentic and welcoming atmosphere.
Charming Towns
Finally, “Pueblos con Encanto” (Charming Towns) is a recognition that Mincetur awards to communities with their own identity and good practices in sustainability and service. These towns receive technical support to improve their tourism management and grow in a balanced way.
With Pozuzo, Peru now has 14 “Charming Towns”. The list includes Malabrigo and Cascas, Sarhua and Quinua, Yanque and Sibayo, Villa Rica and Oxapampa, Huancaya, Ollantaytambo, Lamas, Chavín de Huántar, and Chacas. In addition, Mincetur continues to work with several regions to identify new destinations that can join this initiative.
