Cajamarca Carnival 2026: Key Dates, Events and the Official Theme Song
The Provincial Municipality of Cajamarca, which organizes the traditional carnival, unveiled the poster, program, and official song this weekend. The festival is called “Carnival Forever” and will continue with activities until Saturday, February 28, filling the city with music and color.
Mayor Joaquín Ramírez Gamarra joyfully announced that this day marks the beginning of the carnival. He proudly recalled that Cajamarca is a city with history, tradition, and a vibrant culture, which is why it is once again opening its doors to celebrate what makes it unique.
In his speech, the mayor explained that they are expecting many visitors this year. Thus, the Cajamarca carnival is strengthening its position as a symbol of Peruvian culture and a major attraction for tourists from Peru and around the world.
“Cajamarca is ready to welcome tourists,” he said. He then mentioned the music, dances, parades, and costumes. He also highlighted the warmth of the people. That is why he invited everyone to join in with joy, respect, and responsibility.
Ramírez also asked the population to take care of the historic architecture. He requested that streets, squares, and churches be protected, as they are part of the heritage that identifies the city and fills its residents with pride.
“Carnival is a celebration to be shared,” emphasized the mayor. He also said that it serves to bring us together. In this way, Cajamarca can show the world that it knows how to celebrate without disrespecting its city and its culture.
Finally, the mayor encouraged people to experience the tradition through responsible, orderly, and safe tourism, because he wants the joy to last and not fade quickly, and he also wants the carnival to be respected, valued, and passed on to future generations.
Intangible heritage
Fernando Silva Martos, manager of Tourism and Culture, said that the carnival is a key activity for the region. He also explained that it strengthens identity and, therefore, becomes a symbol of intangible cultural heritage that the population must care for and strengthen.
Silva highlighted the Casona Espinach, in the historic center, as the launch site. He said that this space has seen many carnival kickoffs over the years and also helps people feel a sense of belonging and showcase their culture. That is why, he said, the presentation had special significance.
According to the official program, on Tuesday, January 20, the municipality will present the candidates for Carnival Queen 2026. The conference will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Belén Monumental Complex, one block from the Main Square.
Then, on Thursday, January 22, they will elect the Carnival Queen of the towns. The event will take place at 9:00 a.m. at the Miguel Espinach Cultural Center. In addition, on Saturday, January 24, the Grand Carnival Parade will arrive at 10:00 a.m., with neighborhoods parading through the streets of the historic center and filling the city with joy.
