The World Travel Awards organization gave Machu Picchu a big award. It named it “The World’s Leading Tourist Attraction 2025.” In addition, Machu Picchu has been a World Heritage Site since 1983. It has also been one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World since 2007.

This place is located in Cusco, Peru. It beat out other very famous sites. For example, it surpassed Chichén Itzá in Mexico. It also left behind the Taj Mahal in India. Likewise, it beat the Acropolis in Greece. Then, it surpassed the Grand Canyon in the United States. It even beat the Great Wall of China. It also competed with Kilimanjaro and Niagara Falls.

With this achievement, Machu Picchu has won its seventh award. These awards are known as the “Oscars of Tourism.” It had previously won in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Then it won again in 2021, 2022, and 2024.

The news was shared by Peru Travel. In addition, Promperú confirmed the award. Therefore, the country celebrated this recognition.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is in the middle of the Andes. It is also located near the Peruvian jungle. It was built around 1450. However, the world only learned about it in 1911.

This place is 2,340 meters above sea level. Some say it was a mausoleum for the Inca Pachacútec. Others believe it was an agricultural and administrative center. In addition, its fields helped feed its people.

Many animals live in this area. For example, there are Andean foxes and pumas. Vizcachas and spectacled bears also live there. In addition, there are white-tailed deer. There are also more than 420 species of birds. Among them are the cock-of-the-rock and the Andean condor.

There are also many butterflies. In total, there are about 377 known species. In addition, there are 15 types of amphibians. There are also 25 reptiles. Of these, 9 are lizards and 16 are snakes.

Machu Picchu covers more than 30,000 hectares. Therefore, it has forests and high mountains. There are also peaks and snow-capped mountains. Many trees grow in these places. For example, alder, white cedar, and laurel. In addition, there are forests of unca and queñua.
