Mincetur and Cusco Coordinate Implementation of the Cusco–Choquequirao Tourist Corridor
At a recent meeting, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Teresa Mera, spoke with the regional governor of Cusco, Werner Salcedo. Together, they reviewed ideas for creating a tourist corridor. This corridor would connect the Imperial City with the Choquequirao Archaeological Park. Many people refer to Choquequirao as the “sacred sister of Machu Picchu.” Thus, the project seeks to make it easier to reach this important site.
This plan is part of a tourist corridor program by the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The MTC is promoting it through Provías Descentralizado. It is also working together with Mincetur. Therefore, they want to improve key roads to better connect the territories. At the same time, they seek to promote sustainable tourism. Finally, they hope that this will help the economy of the area.
During the meeting, they reviewed the progress of the “Road Infrastructure and Tourism Connectivity Program in the Cusco-Choquequirao – Infratur Tourism Corridor.” This program has the idea code No. 387305. In addition, they included it in the External Agreements Program for the year 2026. The plan will have a budget of US$300 million. In other words, it is a large project. This money will be financed by CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
For now, CAF is continuing with the process of hiring a specialized consulting firm. This consulting firm will then carry out the pre-investment studies for the program. This will allow the project to move forward with clear data.
