The historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu reaffirmed its commitment to the environment. For the third time, it obtained certification as a carbon-neutral tourist destination. This award demonstrates that the famous Inca site is a world leader in responsible tourism and nature protection.

The official ceremony was held on November 5 in the district of Machu Picchu, in Cusco. Local authorities said it was a “historic day.” Since the climate protection program began, the town has managed to reduce its carbon emissions by 18%.

This achievement was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of the municipality of Machu Picchu, SERNANP, and private companies. Among them are Inkaterra, Grupo AJE, and the certifying body Green Initiative. All have worked for several years to make the sanctuary a cleaner and more sustainable place.

According to the organization Bosques Amazónicos (BAM), the citadel offset its pollution through carbon credits. These credits were generated by more than 560 families in Madre de Dios who protect the Amazon rainforest. As a result, 2,155 tons of CO₂e were offset.

What actions were taken?

  • Among the most important measures are:
  • Compactors for recycling plastic bottles.
  • A biodiesel plant that prevents pollution of the Vilcanota River.
  • A pyrolyzer that transforms organic waste into biochar.
  • A glass crusher that reduces damage to ecosystems.
  • These actions help tourism operate within a circular economy, where nothing is wasted and everything is used.
  • A model for the world

The Green Initiative organization pointed out that Machu Picchu demonstrates that tourism can be sustainable. It also highlighted that the sanctuary maintains its global climate leadership.

Since 2016, the site has been implementing an environmental plan with clear goals: to reduce emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. In this way, Machu Picchu is following the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

Thanks to this effort, the sanctuary is not only a World Heritage Site, but also the first Wonder of the World to be carbon neutral. This reinforces its prestige and tourist appeal around the globe.

What should tourists do?

Visitors can also take care of the environment. When traveling to Machu Picchu, they are asked to use energy responsibly, not litter, and reduce their environmental footprint.

With this new achievement, Machu Picchu inspires other destinations in Peru and around the world to follow its example. In this way, tourism becomes a way to protect nature and ensure a greener future for all.
