The Ministry of Culture announced a new rule to protect Machu Picchu. Starting in 2026, only up to 5,600 people per day will be allowed to enter on certain special dates. This decision helps protect cultural heritage and better control the arrival of tourists.

According to the notice published in the newspaper El Peruano, the increase in visitors will only be allowed on public holidays and long weekends. In this way, the government seeks to maintain a balance between tourism and conservation of the site. It also wants visitors to have a safe and orderly experience.

On the other hand, the Ministry reported that tickets will only be sold online, through the official Tu Boleto website. This will prevent reselling, better control revenue, and make the process more transparent.

The Cusco Department of Culture will be responsible for adjusting the systems and tickets to comply with the new limit. According to their studies, this change respects the site’s capacity and promotes responsible and sustainable tourism.

The new capacity will only apply on the following dates in 2026:

  • January 1
  • April 2-5
  • June 19-November 2
  • December 30-31

During the rest of the year, only 4,500 people will be allowed to enter per day, as is currently the case.

Finally, the Ministry of Culture reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Machu Picchu. It also reiterated that caring for this site is important so that future generations can continue to admire its beauty and history.
