Travel + Leisure chooses luxury train Arequipa to Cusco as The Best in the World for 2026

The Andean Explorer, operated by Belmond in Peru, was named the world’s best train by luxury travel publication Travel + Leisure as part of the 2026 World’s Best Awards. This rail service, the first of its kind and without direct competition on the South American continent, connects the cities of Arequipa and Cusco through an overnight journey that crosses some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes of the Peruvian highlands.

The award, announced on July 8, 2026, puts Peru in the international spotlight as a world-class tourist destination, according to Travel + Leisure. Launched in 2017, the Andean Explorer offers a three-day, two-night journey that combines signature cuisine, onboard spa services, and guided excursions to iconic sites such as Lake Titicaca.

Felipe Portocarrero, Luxury Train Operations Manager, emphasized the significance of this recognition, explaining that the award is a great source of pride and helps considerably in showcasing Peru as a world-class destination on the international stage. The Andean Explorer’s route invites travelers to discover lesser-known corners of the Andean landscape. Throughout the journey, passengers enjoy a culinary offering built around highland ingredients, exclusive cocktails, and spa treatments designed to adapt to the region’s altitude. One of the most memorable moments of the trip takes place at dawn beside Lake Titicaca, when travelers can take in a clear sky filled with stars more than 4,000 meters above sea level.

Among the included activities, the stop at Taquile Island is central to the experience. Located more than 3,000 meters above sea level, the island surprises visitors with the highest natural beach in the world. According to Travel + Leisure, the site allows tourists to go hiking, take part in outdoor activities, and experience a traditional healing ritual in the waters of the lake, adding a layer of cultural authenticity to the luxury offering.

Miraflores Park hotel, in Lima, ranked among the best in Central and South America, while the Monasterio and Palacio Nazarenas hotels, both located in Cusco, were recognized as standouts in the region’s hospitality scene.
