Train service between Hidroelectrica and Machu Picchu resumes after a week of suspension

One week after the mudslide that struck the railroad tracks between Hidroeléctrica and Machu Picchu—completely halting train service in that area—it was confirmed that the entire transportation system resumed normal operations on Monday, April 6.

PeruRail S.A., the company that operates the train on the southeastern route of the country, informed its passengers, travel agencies, tour operators, and the general public that as of today, Monday, April 6, rail operations on the Machu Picchu–Hidroeléctrica route have resumed.

Additionally, the statement noted that this decision was made following official notification from the concessionaire.

Ferrocarril Transandino S.A. confirmed that on Sunday, April 5, the necessary work to restore the train tracks—which had been damaged by a mudslide at kilometer 115 in the Mandor area—was completed.

As a result, local residents and tourists can once again board trains heading to Machu Picchu via the so-called Amazon Route, which includes boarding the service at Hidroeléctrica.

PREVIOUSLY

In the early hours of Monday, March 30, a mudslide carrying rocks severely damaged the railroad tracks on the Hidroeléctrica–Machu Picchu route. As a result, train operations on that section have been suspended until further notice.

As confirmed to Correo, the concessionaire reported preliminarily that a mudslide occurred approximately at PK 115+200, in the Mandor area, and left the tracks in very poor condition.

Consequently, personnel from Ferrocarril Transandino, the concessionaire for that route, determined that all outbound and return train services must be suspended.

It is worth noting that the Hidroeléctrica–Machu Picchu–Hidroeléctrica railway line is frequently used by many travelers entering Peru’s world wonder via the Santa Teresa and La Convención areas.

FACT:

In January of this year, Ferrocarril Transandino also confirmed the suspension of rail operations on the Machu Picchu–Hidroeléctrica route and vice versa. This occurred because the track was damaged by another mudslide, which was recorded at that time at kilometer 114.700 of the railway line.
