Pope Leo XIV will visit Peru in November

Following a bilateral meeting at the Holy See, President José María Balcázar confirmed that the Pope Leo XIV will arrive in Peru during the first two weeks of November 2026. His stay will last between eight and ten days, during which he plans to visit the cities of Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Cusco, and Pucallpa.

The Holy Father’s apostolic journey to the nation now has a set schedule. The Catholic leader will arrive in Peru during the first half of the month, as announced by President Balcázar after their private meeting in Rome.

Consequently, the Pope’s stay in the country will last just over a week and will include stops in several departments. Regarding this, the president indicated that the relevant authorities are finalizing the details of the routes the government delegation will take.

Which cities will Pope Leo XIV visit upon his arrival in Peru?

According to statements made by the president to the RPP radio network, the capital city will be the entry point for the Pope. Subsequently, his trip to Chiclayo is scheduled, a city with which he has deep spiritual ties and where he carried out a significant portion of his pastoral ministry.

In addition, the presidency has proposed the option of coordinating a helicopter airlift for the Pope to travel to the Andean regions of Incahuasi and Cañaris, located in Lambayeque, which are known for their Quechua-speaking native populations.

Similarly, the preliminary route includes northern destinations such as Piura—with a stop in Sullana—in addition to the regions of Cusco and Pucallpa. In line with what Balcázar stated, the feasibility of adding Puno and Loreto (Iquitos) to the final plan remains under review, a decision that will depend on the infrastructure and security assessments carried out by the Holy See delegates.

For the time being, the bilateral teams are continuing their working sessions aimed at finalizing the official activities of this first pastoral visit of Leo XIV to the country as successor of Saint Peter.

What is the historical relationship between Pope Leo XIV and Peru?

It is worth noting that his connection with the South American nation began in 1985, when he arrived in the province of Piura as part of a delegation from the Order of Saint Augustine. Later, he carried out community work in Trujillo, thus taking his first steps within the national clergy.

Additionally, in 2014 he assumed the role of Apostolic Administrator for the Diocese of Chiclayo, later becoming its titular bishop, a position he held until his appointment to the Roman Curia in 2023.

Furthermore, in 2015 he acquired Peruvian citizenship, obtaining his national identity document (DNI). Besides being an active member of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, the current Pope forged a deep bond of fraternity with the people of the northern coast, primarily in the Lambayeque region.

In fact, upon his investiture as Supreme Pontiff, he fondly remembered the city of Chiclayo in his inaugural address from the balcony of the Vatican, expressing his gratitude for the spiritual support of the faithful who walked alongside him in his evangelical work.
