Peru Wins Six Awards, Stands Out in Smart Tourism at FIDI Rio 2026
Peru is establishing itself as a global leader in smart tourism. Furthermore, it played a prominent role at the 2026 Rio de Janeiro International Forum on Smart Tourism Destinations. As a result, it received major awards that highlight real progress in the country’s tourism sector.
During the opening ceremony on April 27, Mincetur was recognized for promoting the Smart Tourism Destinations model throughout Peru. Likewise, Arequipa was recognized for being the first Peruvian destination to achieve the status of an Affiliated Smart Tourism Destination (DTI). With this, the city confirmed that this model is already gaining traction across the regions.
Later, at the 2026 Ibero-American DTI Awards gala, Peru won six international awards. On one hand, the “Ruta de León” received two awards in Tourism Governance. Additionally, the “National Monitoring and Evaluation System for PERTURs” won two awards in Technology and Data Management. Finally, “Granja Porcón” in Cajamarca received two awards for its environmental and social contributions.
This was Peru’s third participation in the FIDI. Furthermore, the country demonstrated steady progress in the DTI model. It began with an adoption phase. It is now in a consolidation phase with clear and measurable results. In 2024, it received 2 awards. In 2025, it earned 11 distinctions. As a result, it ranked as the most awarded country in the region.
Commenting on these achievements, Minister José Reyes Llanos noted that Peru is moving toward a tourism sector characterized by greater innovation, technology, and data utilization. He also explained that these tools help improve destinations and deliver tangible benefits to communities. He further emphasized that these results stem from the collaborative efforts of the national government, regional and local governments, the private sector, and academia.
With these results, Peru confirms its important role in the Ibero-American Network of Smart Tourism Destinations. Furthermore, it consolidates its position as a regional leader in this model. Thus, the country is moving toward a more modern, sustainable, and competitive tourism sector.
