Peru to Add 518,000 Passengers a Year Under Airport Agreements

The open skies policy driven by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MTC) will allow Peru to receive more than 518,000 additional passengers per year, following the signing of 14 new international agreements in a period of less than five months.

This was stated by MTC head Aldo Prieto during a ceremony recognizing the operational management and the commercial venues awarded for their outstanding culinary offerings at Jorge Chávez International Airport.

The minister explained that this strategy goes hand in hand with operational efficiency and the culinary offerings of the new air terminal, elements that, he said, make it a world-class benchmark.

“This remarkable operational efficiency and award-winning culinary offerings, which make this air terminal a global benchmark, are strategically linked to the implementation of an active open skies policy driving our sector. The signing of 14 new international agreements in less than five months creates an unprecedented opportunity for an estimated flow of more than 518,000 additional travelers per year to experience this level of world-class quality and the richness of our national identity firsthand,” he stated.

Prieto noted that the addition of 66 new weekly frequencies and more than 600,000 additional seats per year will help strengthen the country’s international connectivity, while also boosting the economy and tourism, with an estimated foreign currency inflow of more than US$70 million.

Likewise, he affirmed that the increase in travelers will help consolidate Jorge Chávez International Airport as a gateway to Peru, where passengers will enjoy safe, punctual service as well as an excellent culinary offering.

Regarding the growth of air operations, the minister noted that the Lima–Panama route, operated by Copa Airlines, saw an increase of 16.7%, reaching 49 weekly frequencies. Likewise, Latam Airlines’ Lima–Montevideo route increased its flights by 71.4%.

Meanwhile, Boliviana de Aviación added seven weekly frequencies to Santa Cruz. Adding to this picture of expansion is the entry of the European airline LEVEL, which began operating direct flights between Lima and Barcelona with three weekly frequencies and occupancy rates above 80%.

Finally, the minister reaffirmed that the MTC will continue promoting the opening of air transportation, removing operational barriers and opening the skies to the most relevant markets, in order to facilitate the arrival of tourists, strengthen the logistics chain, and improve Peru’s integration with the rest of the world.
