Peru Ranks Second Worldwide in Birdwatching During Global Big Day 2026

Mincetur announced great news for Peru. The country once again captured the world’s attention during Global Big Day 2026, the global birdwatching event. Furthermore, Peru ranked second worldwide in this eBird event, a platform operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University.

As is well known, more than 80,000 people participated in the event. They observed birds in 203 countries. They then uploaded lists, photos, audio recordings, and videos to eBird, helping to record more than 8,000 species worldwide.

On that day, Peru recorded 1,438 bird species. As a result, the country confirmed its status as one of the most biodiverse destinations and a global leader in birdwatching tourism.

In total, 1,278 observers from the country’s 25 regions participated. This figure represents a 24% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 375 people joined the event for the first time, demonstrating that birdwatching is gaining momentum as a sustainable activity that brings people closer to nature.

Several regions stood out for their variety of birds. Among them were Cusco, Madre de Dios, San Martín, Amazonas, Junín, and Pasco. Likewise, Madre de Dios, Lima, and Cusco each exceeded 700 eBird lists and saw strong participation from residents and tourists.

This achievement did not come about on its own. Thousands of birdwatchers from across the country contributed. Public entities, communities, bird clubs, and tour operators also provided support.

Mincetur stated that this achievement enhances Peru’s global image. It also reaffirms the country’s status as a premier destination for biodiversity and birdwatching. Furthermore, it creates opportunities and helps protect natural areas.
