Peru Promotes Strategic Projects with the Support of UN Tourism

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), through Vice Minister Aracelly Laca, held a high-level meeting today with the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, Shaikha Al Nowais. The main purpose of this session was to promote far-reaching plans focused on innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness of Peruvian tourist attractions. Consequently, the aim is to reaffirm the country’s position as a key player in global tourism sector decisions.

This meeting took place in the lead-up to the 126th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council, held on June 10 and 11 in Toledo, Spain. As a result, bilateral cooperation was strengthened and projects aimed at benefiting the various regions of Peru were expedited.

In this regard, trade priorities will focus on training small tourism businesses located in areas with tourism potential, optimizing their management capacities, promoting sustainable practices, and improving the accessibility of their services, thus contributing to a more competitive and inclusive offering.

The presence of the Peruvian delegation in Toledo is significant due to the active role the country has been playing within UN Tourism, assuming strategic responsibilities in the organization’s main governance bodies.

In fact, Peru is part of the Executive Council for the 2025-2027 triennium and also chairs the Programme and Budget Committee (PBC). The Secretary-General applauded this leadership, describing the national management as transparent, responsible, and aligned with global goals.

Consequently, Vice Minister Laca will chair the PBC session on June 10, where institutional finances, progress on the work plan, and planning for the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027 will be evaluated.

Finally, the country is bidding to host the 128th session of the UN Tourism Executive Council in 2027, a bid aimed at strengthening its international prestige.

As part of her official agenda in Spain, the Vice Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with Olga Kefalogianni, Minister of Tourism of Greece, and Daehyun Kim, Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, with the objective of strengthening cooperation in innovation, digitalization, sustainability, and destination management.
