National Geographic Highlights Pallay Punchu Among the World’s Most Stunning Rainbow Mountains

The Pallay Punchu and Vinicunca mountains are two famous places in the Cusco region. Now, they appear among the six most beautiful colorful mountains in the world. This was reported by National Geographic Traveler magazine.

Both mountains joined an international list of colorful landscapes. In addition, the list includes places in Iceland, China, Argentina, and the United States. These mountains are true natural wonders because they were formed over millions of years by layers of earth and minerals.
Pallay Punchu, also called the “Andean poncho,” is in the district of Layo, in the province of Canas. It rises more than 4,700 meters above sea level. Today, it is one of the new tourist attractions in southern Peru.
Its Quechua name means “decorated poncho.” This name comes from the red, green, and brown stripes on the mountain. These colors look like the designs of traditional Andean textiles, according to the Andina news agency.
The mountain has a history of almost 250 million years. Also, it is important not only for its beauty but also for its culture. Local communities see this place as part of their ancestral land, and they also value the sasawi, a medicinal plant used to help with breathing problems.
To reach the main viewpoint, visitors must walk between 45 minutes and one hour. During the hike, they can enjoy the high-Andean landscape. They can also see Langui-Layo Lake, another natural attraction in the area.
In early May, the Regional Office of Foreign Trade and Tourism in Cusco, known as Gercetur, started a campaign to promote Pallay Punchu and Palccoyo. Therefore, both colorful mountains may receive more visitors during the 2026 high tourism season.
