Machu Picchu increases its capacity to 5,600 visitors

The measure takes effect this Friday, June 19, according to the current ministerial resolution, due to the large number of visitors arriving in the region.

The citadel of Machu Picchu, located in Cusco, will increase its daily visitor capacity to 5,600 starting this Friday, June 19, marking the beginning of the high season for the country’s main tourist attraction. This measure complies with the provisions of Ministerial Resolution No. 285-2025-MC.

Maritza Rosa Candia, director of the Cusco Regional Directorate of Culture, indicated that until June 18, entry was restricted to 4,600 people. According to the official, the high number of visitors justifies the activation of this new capacity. According to the official schedule, this period of increased capacity will extend until November 2.

To reach Machu Picchu, visitors can choose between the trains departing from Ollantaytambo or the Amazonian route that passes by the hydroelectric plant. Access via the Inca Trail to this archaeological wonder is also a popular option. Currently, tourist traffic in the province of Urubamba has fully recovered.

Regarding ticket distribution, the system reserves 3,600 tickets for sale through the online platform, while the remaining 1,000 tickets are sold in person at the Machu Picchu Pueblo offices. This in-person sales method has resulted in long lines of people waiting their turn to purchase tickets.

To alleviate the inconvenience for travelers, the Cusco authorities implemented in-person ticket sales three days in advance. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture is evaluating a proposal for a public awareness campaign to organize visits to the site, given the difficulties caused by prolonged stays.

Regarding proposals to increase visitor capacity again, Rosa Candia clarified that any decision must be based on technical studies of the historical monument’s carrying capacity.

“A study must be conducted to expand the carrying capacity. It’s not about simply increasing the number of visitors; we have to assess the monument’s condition. We cannot be irresponsible and activate and increase capacity without a study,” she stated.

Finally, the official suggested the strict application of the approved Master Plan for the sanctuary. According to current regulations, the limit of 5,600 tourists will also apply on specific dates in December. Official controls aim to ensure compliance with the assigned times for each group of visitors.
