Machu Picchu celebrates 19 years as a New Wonder of the World

On July 7, 2026, Machu Picchu celebrates 19 years since its designation as a Wonder of the Modern World. The Inca citadel commemorates a momentous milestone in its history, one that filled Peruvians with pride and joy.

Historic Landmark and Global Distinction

The growing international prestige of the citadel, built in the 15th century by order of the Inca Pachacútec, in the heart of the Andes at an altitude of 2,453 meters, attracts millions of visitors from around the world, who seek to explore it and be captivated by its impressive engineering and architecture.

As a reward for the admiration shown by its visitors, millions of Peruvians and people from different countries around the world cast their votes to choose Machu Picchu as a landmark of modern history. Thus, the citadel of Machu Picchu was chosen in the competition organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation as one of the seven new wonders of the world on July 7, 2007.

From that moment on, every July 7, Peruvians (and in particular the residents of the Cusco district of Machu Picchu Pueblo) celebrate this global distinction with a wide-ranging program of activities: a formal ceremony, cultural events, and parades with dances and music, creating a festive atmosphere and, at the same time, encouraging the care and preservation of this valuable Inca legacy.
