Lima Celebrates Launch of Inti Raymi and Cusco Festivities 2026

Hundreds of Lima residents and tourists, both from Peru and other countries, gathered at Lima’s Plaza Mayor. There, they witnessed the launch of Inti Raymi and the Cusco 2026 festivities. It was a free event. Moreover, it filled the historic center with music and color. As a result, many families stayed until the end to enjoy every performance.

The ceremony was organized by the Municipality of Lima and the Cusco Festival Company. The Culture Department also participated. In this way, Lima showcased itself as an important venue for promoting Peru’s traditions. This allows more people to learn about these celebrations.

Furthermore, the event aimed to raise awareness of this significant festival. It also sought to draw the public’s attention to the grand celebration in Cusco on June 24. Additionally, it highlighted its ancestral value as part of the Tahuantinsuyo heritage, which strengthens cultural identity and keeps alive a tradition that is part of the country’s heritage.

Starting in the afternoon, the public enjoyed a very colorful parade. More than 150 artists participated. Later, they performed in the atrium of Lima Cathedral. There, they reenacted the Inti Raymi with Andean dances and rituals. This helped the audience better understand the history.

One of the most applauded moments was the appearance of the Inca and the Coya. They participated in the ceremony called “Hampi Kamayoq.” As a result, many attendees took photos and videos.

During the event, Deputy Mayor Fabiola Morales spoke about its significance. She emphasized that this event strengthens the country’s identity. She also expressed her pride in welcoming the artists to such an important part of Lima, home to the Cathedral, City Hall, and the Government Palace, which made the event even more special.

Several officials were also in attendance. Among them was President José María Balcázar. Likewise, the mayor of Cusco, Luis Beltrán Pantoja, attended. Also present was Fernando Amaut, representative of the festivities.

As is well known, Inti Raymi is celebrated every June 24 in Cusco. This festival commemorates the winter solstice. It also marks the beginning of a new agricultural cycle in Inca times. For this reason, it holds great historical significance.

The ceremony takes place at important sites in Cusco. Among them are the Qorikancha, the Plaza de Armas, and Saqsaywaman. Many performers take part there. Thousands of spectators also attend. Thus, it has become one of the largest cultural festivals in Latin America.
