Huayna Picchu to Close in June for Conservation Work at Machu Picchu

The Ministry of Culture announced the temporary closure of Waynapicchu. The measure will be in effect from June 1 to 30, 2026. In addition, the Cusco Regional Office of Culture explained that it will carry out specialized conservation and maintenance work on Route 3-A of Circuit 3 in the Machu Picchu site.

During that month, teams will care for the archaeological structures. They will also reinforce safety along the trail leading up to Waynapicchu. Therefore, the work will cover several sections of the trail from the checkpoint to the summit of the mountain.

Among the planned actions is the reinforcement of the pre-Hispanic stairways. Additionally, the teams will consolidate retaining walls and drainage systems. They will also maintain the walking surfaces using traditional techniques to protect the ancient path without altering its historical value. They will also install steel cable railings in steeper and more hazardous areas.

The work will include measures to protect the local environment. In this regard, the teams will remove moss from archaeological structures and clear vegetation in a controlled manner. They will also remove roots and shrubs that compromise the stability of platforms and paths.

César Medina Alpaca directs the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park. He stated that these efforts are essential. As he explained, specialists need to carry out comprehensive work on Wayna Picchu without visitors present to better protect the site.

Rescue workers will also be on standby in high-risk areas. Biologists will also oversee the management and control of vegetation along the trail.

Finally, the Cusco Department of Culture urged tour operators and visitors to take precautions. It also noted that the measure aims to preserve one of the most iconic areas of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.
