From Punta Cana to Machu Picchu: International Alliance Signed in Colombia
The District Municipality of Machu Picchu granted permission for Mayor Elvis Lexin La Torre Uñaccori to travel. It also authorized the head of International Technical Cooperation, Oscar Valencia Aucca. They will attend a special ceremony where they will sign an agreement with the Municipal Council of the Tourist District of Verón Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic. In this way, Machu Picchu aims to establish partnerships and collaborate with other locations around the world.
The decision was recorded in Resolution 07-2026-MDM-CM. It was also published in the official gazette El Peruano. With this, the municipality seeks to strengthen international alliances. For example, it wants to improve tourism and the way local management is organized.
The agreement will be signed at the ANATO Tourism Showcase
The signing will take place in Bogotá, Colombia, on February 25, 2026, during the ANATO Tourism Showcase. This is the most important tourism event in Colombia, which is why many authorities and companies gather there to make agreements and showcase destinations.
Regional Cooperation and International Context
This agreement comes at a time of increased teamwork between countries. In January 2026, Peru and the Dominican Republic signed a memorandum of understanding at FITUR in Madrid. Both countries want to promote sustainable tourism. They also want it to be competitive. In addition, they want it to be innovative in order to attract more visitors.
The document was signed by two authorities. On one side was the Peruvian Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Teresa Mera Gómez. On the other side was the Dominican Deputy Minister of International Cooperation, Carlos Andrés Peguero. This agreement serves as a working guide. It allows for the sharing of good ideas. It also helps to improve institutions. In addition, it promotes a variety of tourism products so that there are more options.
At the local level, Machu Picchu wants to use these agreements in a practical way. First, it wants to learn about destination management. Then, it seeks to improve promotion. In addition, it wants to promote community tourism. Finally, it wants to strengthen marketing. In this way, the municipality hopes to create strong ties with well-known destinations in the region.
Overview of Machu Picchu and Punta Cana
This agreement brings together two very famous destinations. However, each one is different. Machu Picchu stood out in 2026 as the number one destination in South America. It also ranked eighth worldwide, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Vacations 2026 ranking, thanks to its cultural and historical value. In addition, its focus on sustainability is highlighted, which attracts many travelers.
In 2025, the sanctuary received 1,170,389 visitors. Most were foreign tourists, accounting for 78.4%. In contrast, 21.6% were domestic visitors. These figures were reported by the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism. As a result, Machu Picchu continues to be a highly visited and well-preserved site.
Meanwhile, Punta Cana is famous for its sun and beaches. That is why many people choose it as a vacation destination. In addition, the Dominican Republic was the second most visited country in Latin America in 2025. That year, it achieved a record 11.6 million visitors. Thus, both destinations come to this agreement with a wealth of experience, albeit for different reasons.
