Even though summer is over, Peruvians’ appetite for travel hasn’t slowed down one bit. According to recent data from PromPerú, 37% of the population is planning to take a trip sometime in the next six months — a clear sign that tourist demand remains alive and well.

Those who already make a habit of vacationing within the country are the most committed: more than half (53%) are planning to hit the road again soon. Among those who haven’t traveled domestically in a while, one in four is considering getting back out there — a real opening for the tourism industry to re-engage a segment that had been sitting on the sidelines.

When it comes to generations, Gen Z leads the pack, with 48% ready to explore destinations across the country. Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers show more similar levels of interest to one another, ranging between 29% and 36%.

Dominance of domestic tourism

Of those planning to travel, 89% will stay within Peru, and 84% intend to visit regions outside of where they currently live — all in search of experiences that break from their everyday routine.

Southern Peru tops the list of intended destinations (33%), with Cusco and Arequipa standing out as the top draws, both deeply tied to the country’s rich cultural heritage. The northern and central regions are also pulling in interest, particularly among higher-income travelers and Baby Boomers, respectively.

Today’s Peruvian traveler is thoughtful and selective — someone who puts a premium on planning ahead, comfort, and experiences that carry genuine emotional weight. For tour operators, that’s both a challenge and an opportunity: the key is putting together offerings that are straightforward, affordable, and easy to book.

At the end of the day, regardless of the season, domestic tourism keeps reflecting something deeply rooted in Peruvians: the desire to explore their own country and find new meaning in every journey.
