Route to Choquequirao Reopens After Maintenance Work

The Ministry of Culture announced today the official reopening of the Capuliyoc-Cachora tourist route to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park. It also stated that access will be available again starting April 15, 2026. This decision was made following a multisectoral technical meeting organized by the Cusco Regional Office of Culture the previous day, where various authorities assessed the situation and agreed that safe conditions now exist to receive visitors.

Representatives from several government agencies participated in the meeting. For example, members from tourism, risk management, and cultural heritage attended. Local authorities, such as the mayors of Santa Teresa and San Pedro de Cachora, were also present. In this way, all key institutions were able to coordinate actions and share important information regarding the reopening.

This measure was taken after work was carried out in the area. First, crews performed preventive maintenance on the roads. Then, they cleared the routes and improved access points. The goal was to ensure that visitors can travel safely. Thanks to these efforts, the main route is now in better condition for tourism.

The director of the Choquequirao Archaeological Park, Atilio Quispecusi Montalvo, explained the current situation. On the one hand, he noted that the Río Blanco section is still not accessible. However, he emphasized that the Capuliyoc-Cachora trail is now in good condition following the work that has been done. For this reason, he recommended that visitors use only the designated trails to avoid risks.

For her part, the director of the Cusco DDC, Maritza Rosa Candia, highlighted the importance of this decision. In that regard, she stated that the reopening reflects a commitment to protecting tourists and preserving cultural heritage. Additionally, she noted that the work carried out allows visitors to enter with adequate safety measures in place, which provides greater confidence during the tour.

Regarding the agreements, the authorities defined several concrete actions. First, they will prepare technical reports to continuously assess the situation. Next, they will constantly monitor safety measures. In this way, the goal is to maintain the route in good condition and protect cultural heritage in the long term.

Likewise, the institutions agreed to work together. For example, they will strengthen coordination among public entities, local governments, travel agencies, and communities. In this way, everyone can contribute to more organized and safer tourism in the area.

Finally, the event concluded with the signing of a memorandum of understanding by all participating institutions. In addition, the commitment to continue working together was reaffirmed. Consequently, the authorities aim to protect cultural heritage while promoting safe and sustainable tourism in the Cusco region.
